Nigerian fintech giant OPay has issued a formal legal notice to popular X user Danny of Owerri (@DrDanny2030) over claims that the company paid an influencer N5 million to spread a false rumour that it was shutting down.
This latest move follows similar legal notices OPay issued on September 2 to three other individuals. Adamu B. Garba II (@adamugarba), Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba), and a TikTok account @viralgrabtvng had circulated false claims that the company was going on a “long indefinite break” and advised customers to withdraw their funds.
The Allegation by Danny of Owerri Against OPay
Danny had alleged that OPay staged a publicity stunt by paying a female influencer to push a fabricated “shutdown” narrative. 
According to him, the goal was to generate controversy and attention, which the company could later leverage for PR and customer acquisition.
Danny of Owerri claimed the offer was extended to several influencers, but many declined because they did not want to damage their credibility.
The post quickly gained traction, with thousands of users reacting and reposting.

OPay’s Legal Notice to Danny of Owerri
In a strongly worded letter signed by its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokusoh, OPay described Danny’s claims as false, malicious, and defamatory.
It stated that Danny of Owerri’s post was a deliberate attempt to damage its reputation and commercial interests, and manufacture controversy for ulterior publicity purposes.
The letter demanded that Danny immediately delete the post, stop further dissemination of the allegation, and provide any evidence supporting his claims by 11:59 PM (WAT) on Thursday, 3 September 2026. OPay warned that his failure to comply would lead to legal action against him.

Danny’s Reply to OPay’s Legal Notice
Danny responded defiantly in a series of posts. He said:
“If na to delete, I go delete, but first of all, arrest that girl. If not una no get levels for where I dey, and I will never use your product again. You can’t tell me this is 5 days now and you have not arrested that girl. I want to see her arrested before you come pick me up.”
In a follow-up post, he added:
“I will lay down my freedom as long as that girl does jail. She needs to taste it before me. If OPay no pick am up, they will have me drag them till they do the needful.”
Danny is essentially refusing to take down the post unless OPay first takes action against the influencer he claims was paid to spread the rumour.
While OPay is treating the matter as a serious case of defamation, Danny is framing it as a fight for accountability, insisting the alleged influencer must face consequences before he does.
