A Nigerian-American family is inspiring people with an extraordinary legacy of service in healthcare. Dr Chinyere Okpaleke, popularly known as Dr Chi, celebrated her six siblings and their remarkable journey five years ago during the Nation Siblings Day celebration.
Houston-based family medicine doctor, Dr Chi, once shared a photo of her siblings wearing white coats, synonymous with the medical profession. The image quickly attracted widespread attention. It highlighted a family whose story combines immigration, sacrifice, education and service.
The seven siblings all work in healthcare in the United States. Four are medical doctors, two are nurse practitioners, and one is a pathology assistant. Their achievement reflects the influence of their parents. Their father is a retired physician, while their mother is a physician assistant. 
Parents’ Sacrifice Shaped Their Journey
The Okpaleke family’s story began with their parents, from Anambra State, left Nigeria for the United States. They worked hard to create better opportunities for their children. Their sacrifices eventually helped shape a family committed to caring for others. Dr Chi has repeatedly credited her parents for encouraging the siblings to pursue healthcare.
“Our journey into the health field was led and encouraged by one another, especially our parents,” she said.
She explained that each sibling followed a different path. However, they shared the same desire to help people. The siblings also supported one another throughout their education and professional journeys.
“We all shared the desire to help others and to play a vital part in assuring someone’s health is taken care of,” she added.
Seven Siblings, One Healthcare Legacy
The seven siblings include one son and six daughters. Together, they have built an impressive presence across different areas of healthcare.
Their father Andrew Okpaleke, is a retired internal medicine physician. Their mother, Celina Okpaleke, is a physician assistant. Celina has also owned and operated a home health business for more than two decades. Despite choosing different professional paths, the siblings remained united by their commitment to healthcare. Their parents’ example clearly influenced that decision.
“We watched our parents sacrifice so much to give us a chance to make the most of our blessings,” Dr Chi said.
The family became widely known as the “White Coat Family”. She added that her parents could not be prouder of their children. Dr Chi said the response touched her deeply. Some parents even told her they displayed the photograph in their homes.
“I’ve had someone say they printed it out and put it on their refrigerator,” she said. “They wanted their children to see it as motivation. It’s very touching.”
The photograph also carried a wider message about immigrant families and professional achievement. Dr Chi said her parents’ Nigerian heritage shaped their determination to succeed.

Dr Chi Advises Parents
After their family photo had gone viral, Dr Chi advises parents on choosing careers for their children. She revisited the family’s story in 2026 on social media.
She also reflected on how their story inspired families during the COVID era. The family became a symbol of sacrifice, determination and generational dreams. Dr Chi said their journey also demonstrated that immigrants can make meaningful contributions to American society. However, she stressed that their bond matters more than their professional titles. For parents, Dr Chi offered a simple message about raising successful children.
“Allow your children to find their way,” she advised. “Always encourage them and lead them in the direction that will make them happy. Their passion should always supersede a title.”
