Ikeja Electric has issued a public notice informing customers who paid for electricity meters under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme that they may be eligible for a refund.
According to the electricity distribution company (DisCo), customers who participated in the MAP initiative and paid for their meters can now check their eligibility status. They can get full details of the refund process directly on the Ikeja Electric website.
Why Ikeja Electric is Refunding to Customers Who Participated in the MAP Initiative
A NERC directive with Order No. NERC/ 2026/025 was issued on February 27, 2026. It is an official order requiring all DisCos to refund customers who paid for their meters under the MAP scheme.
This order was made because a compliance review showed that as of December 31, 2025, DisCos still owed customers a total of N20.33 billion.
NERC therefore ordered them to clear this outstanding amount within 12 months, starting from March 1, 2026.

When Did the MAP Scheme Start?
The MAP Regulations were issued by NERC in 2018. It became effective around April that year, and actual meter rollout and customer payments began in May 2019.
From that date, unmetered customers of the DisCos could apply, pay (instead of waiting for free government schemes) for a prepaid meter either fully upfront or in instalments. After application, the meters were installed by approved Meter Asset Providers, usually within about 10 working days of full payment.
The scheme continued for several years afterwards, so the customers now eligible for refunds are those who paid under MAP from May 2019 onward.
