Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old football player and student at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was reported missing after a trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Wells travelled to the island with a group of friends on a small boat on July 4. According to reports, witnesses last saw him on the island around 3 p.m. that day. His friends later returned to the mainland without him, and his mother reported him missing late Saturday night.
The Token Black Person
The case received national attention after photos surfaced online revealing that Wells was the only Black person in the group that visited Horn Island. The images left people questioning the circumstances of his disappearance. While authorities have discovered no evidence of a racially motivated crime or foul play, the case is still being actively investigated. Wells’ family has hired Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney, to help them find answers and ensure a transparent investigation into the events leading up to his death.

Discovery on Horn Island
Authorities launched a large search operation involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the United Cajun Navy.
On Monday morning, a park ranger discovered a body at the northwest end of Horn Island around 8:45 a.m. Officials believe the body is that of Wells. Although investigators are awaiting DNA confirmation, authorities said they have no reason to believe the body belongs to anyone else. The body matched Wells’ description, and his family later confirmed his death in social media posts.

The Investigation Into His Disappearance
According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, investigators believe Wells chose to remain on the island because he expected to return to the mainland with someone else. Ledbetter also stated that Wells’ friends have cooperated fully with the investigation.
Furthermore, investigators have not found any evidence of drug or alcohol use. Officials have scheduled an autopsy, and the coroner will release more information after completing the investigation and toxicology tests.
Remembering a “Special Soul”
Wells played football at Ocean Springs High School before continuing his athletic career as a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He would have celebrated his 19th birthday next month.
In a social media post, Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, asked anyone who visited the island to share photos, videos, or information that could help the family understand what happened.
“My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others,” she wrote. “Nolan was a special soul.”
