There’s a new African Union chairman on the horizon, and it’s Ghana’s John Mahama.

How do we know? Recently, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers unanimously endorsed the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, as the candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) Commission during its 95th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers held in Abuja.

And we get why. Here are 5 reasons Ghana’s John Mahama is the perfect AU chairman.

1. John Mahama has the charm of a unifier.

President Mahama’s multiculturalism makes him a charming unifier. For instance, he has a connection to Nigeria because he was brought up by his Nigerian stepmother in Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria.

No wonder, he has been bestowed two Nigerian titles, Aare Atayeto Oodua and the Aare Atolase of Offa.

Aare Atayeto Oodua means “a president who reorganises the global space for humanity”.

    2. Africa is currently going through a lot

This endorsement comes as Africa needs capable leadership to deal with its problems. From the crisis in Congo, kidnappings in Nigeria, and coup attempts in Benin to political and civil unrest in many other African countries, President Mahama’s vast political experience and Pan-Africanism are just what is needed.

His vision is for Africa, through the African Union Commission, to be an inclusive, equitable, and prosperous continent. Part of his mission will be to strengthen economic integration, advance the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and tackle key challenges and future ambitions.

        4. He has performed well so far during his second term

Although this is technically his second term, he has accomplished quite a lot. He reduced the size of government expenses, eliminated the controversial E-levy, and enhanced efforts to tackle illegal mining.

He underscored a commitment to transparency, accountability, and urgency within his administration.

Shortly after assuming office, Mahama initiated an investigation into the National Cathedral of Ghana project, which was approved under his predecessor, Nana Akufo-Addo, in response to concerns regarding corruption.

Furthermore, he mandated a ban on non-essential travel for government officials, stipulating that any authorised travel should be conducted modestly.

          5. He has popular support

Popular support is the bedrock of democracy and the foundation of true diplomacy. The president has the support of many African leaders, which means he will most likely succeed in his role.
