CNN, MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) and Politico have announced they are suing the Trump administration after their journalists were barred from the White House.
In a joint statement released on Monday, September 21, the three major news outlets said they had notified the government that they are filing a federal lawsuit. The statement argued that the White House revoked their journalists’ credentials without notice or process simply because it objected to their reporting. They noted that leaving this unchallenged would threaten press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism.
How the Ban Unfolded
President Donald Trump announced the ban on Friday. In a post on X, he described coverage by the outlets as “fake news” and their reports as cumulatively negative. 
On Saturday morning, reporters from the three organisations arrived for work at the White House only to find their hard passes deactivated. Secret Service personnel denied them entry and confiscated their credentials.
The same day, CNN released a statement insisting the ban was an illegal assault on their constitutional right to report independently. CNN vowed to continue covering the administration without fear or favour and stood firmly behind its White House team.

What the Lawsuit Seeks
The statement released by the news organisations argues that the sudden revocation of credentials without notice violates both the First Amendment and the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.
They are asking a federal court in Washington, D.C., for an emergency order restoring their access while the case proceeds. The lawsuit names President Trump along with White House Chief of Staff, Communications Director, and Secret Service Director.
This development is not in isolation as it marks a major escalation in the long-running friction between the Trump administration and some national media organisations. There have been similar controversies over access of the press to the specific White House space. This includes efforts to restrict individual reporters or outlets.
The three organisations maintain that the White House belongs to the public. The claimed that independent journalism should not depend on whether the government likes the content of the coverage. The administration has not yet issued a detailed formal response to the lawsuit announcement.
