The Canadian government has announced an increase in application fees for permanent residence (PR) and citizenship. This development affects Nigerians and other foreign nationals applying for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship.
Punch News reports that, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the new fees will take effect from March 31 for citizenship. As for permanent residence applications, the implementation of new fees will take effect from April 30, 2026.
Fees for permanent residency are set to rise by at least $25 across several categories, while the right of citizenship fee will increase from $119.75 to $123.

Canada last increased PR application fees on April 30, 2024. This was part of a regular adjustment (every two years) to match inflation. Before April 30, 2024, the right of permanent residence fee was $515.
Every two years, Canada updates the fees for permanent residence to help cover the cost of running immigration programs and to keep up with the number of people applying.
Canada Permanent Residence and Citizenship Fees Increase: Full List of Updated Fees
The full list for principal applicants by program includes:
- Right of permanent residence fee – increase by $25 from $575 to $600 (+$25)
- Provincial Nominee Program – increase by $40 from $950 to $990 (+$40)
- Business – increase by $85 from $1,810 to $1,895 (+$85)
- Family class – increase by $25 from $545 to $570 (+$25)
- Protected persons – increase by $25 from $635 to $660 (+$25)
- Humanitarian and compassionate grounds or public policy measures – increase by $25 from $635 to $660 (+$25)
- Permit holders – increase by $15 from $375 to $390 (+$15)
