For years, the African Union has pushed the idea of easier movement across the continent through policies tied to African integration and Agenda 2063.

The vision was simple: Africans should be able to move across African borders more freely for business, tourism, education, and work. Despite the agreements, many African countries still maintain strict visa systems for fellow Africans.

Burundi, in East-Central Africa, is one of the most recent African countries advocating for greater regional integration and simpler travel within the continent, having formally eliminated visa requirements for Africans today.

2. Ghana

Ghana gained major attention after expanding visa-free access to Africans as part of broader Pan-African efforts. The move was widely praised across social media and political spaces, especially by Africans who felt the country was matching Pan-African language with actual policy.

This policy allows Africans to enter without a visa requirement. Travellers must provide a valid passport, a return flight ticket, and a valid yellow fever vaccination card.

3. Togo

Togo remains one of the easier West African countries to access for Africans, particularly within regional ECOWAS movement agreements. Effective on May 18, 2026, Togo declared the removal of all visa requirements for citizens of all African countries holding a valid national passport.

The policy allows Africans to visit for short stays of up to 30 days. However, certain procedures must still be followed, including completing an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arrival. Travellers must provide a valid passport, approved digital travel declaration, proof of accommodation, onwards ticket, and a valid yellow fever vaccination card at Lomé airport or land borders.

These three countries join The Gambia, Benin, Rwanda and Seychelles in being visa-free.

However, several other African countries now operate visa-on-arrival systems instead.

Countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius, and others have introduced easier arrival processes that allow Africans to obtain visas at the border instead of applying months before travelling.

Even though visa on arrival is still different from complete visa-free access, many Africans see it as a step closer toward the continent’s long-discussed goal of freer movement.

But for now, the reality remains that travelling across Africa is still much easier in theory than it is in practice.
