The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has announced that anyone updating a business name online must now provide extra personal and contact information.

The commission said the change is to improve verification and ensure business records are accurate. It is also part of CAC’s ongoing effort to digitize processes and strengthen compliance.

What You Need to Provide

Starting immediately, business owners submitting online updates must include:

  • Date of birth
  • Registered office email
  • Proprietor’s email
  • Phone number (for the registered address or proprietor if different)
  • A valid means of identification

CAC explained that these requirements will make business records more accurate and reduce errors or fraud. The notice said:

“The inclusion of these details will ensure that all business name records are accurate and verifiable, improving our capacity to serve businesses efficiently.”

Business owners who fail to provide this information may face delays or rejection of their update requests.

Why This Matters

The CAC is Nigeria’s regulatory authority responsible for the registration and management of companies and business names and over the years, the commission has been modernising its processes, moving from manual systems to a more efficient online platform to ease registration and updates for businesses across the country.

In April, the commission gave unregistered businesses six weeks to regularize their status, warning that non-compliance could lead to prosecution.

In August, CAC also exposed 247 companies operating with fake RC numbers. These companies were never legally registered, and their numbers were removed from the official database.

The CAC also plans to remove dormant or non-compliant companies that haven’t updated records or filed returns for over 10 years.

All of this is part of the push to clean up the registry and protect investors.

By mandating these details, the CAC expects to streamline its database, ease compliance checks, and provide more secure and efficient services to entrepreneurs nationwide.
