Nigeria’s hydrological agency has issued a stark warning that more than 8,000 communities and 4,500 schools across 15 states are at high risk of flooding between September 19 and 25, 2026.

The latest National Flood Advisory from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) highlights rising river levels that could flood vulnerable areas. Rising river levels threaten homes, schools, healthcare facilities, markets, religious buildings, and farmlands.

NiHSA Director-General and CEO Arch Umar Mohammed released the advisory on Saturday, September 19, urging state governments to act quickly by relocating residents from flood-prone communities to safer ground.
