Nigerian football legend Jay Jay Okocha has revealed the surprising story behind his famous name. Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, the former Super Eagles captain has no “J” among his birth names.

However, a childhood nickname eventually became his identity worldwide. Okocha explained the story during an interview with John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy on The Obi One Podcast.

He also recalled his unusual route into professional football. Unlike many Nigerian players, he barely played in the domestic league before moving abroad.

How Augustine Okocha became ‘Jay Jay’

Okocha said his famous nickname came from his elder brother, James, whose nickname was Jay Jay. The footballer grew up playing football in his neighbourhood, where several players were called Austin.

The other players needed a way to distinguish him from the other Austins. Therefore, they began calling him “Austin, Jay Jay’s brother”. His brother’s nickname eventually stuck.

Okocha later travelled abroad and noticed that people struggled to pronounce Augustine. He realised that “Jay Jay” was much easier for people to say. So, he adopted the nickname professionally.

“It’s in my passport now because I’ve made it my legitimate name,” he explained.

However, the football icon joked that adopting his brother’s name comes with a price.

“But I still pay royalties to my brother,” Okocha joked. “It’s like the name brought me good omen, in actual fact.”

The nickname later became legendary during his European career. His Bolton Wanderers supporters famously celebrated his brilliance by saying he was so good, they named him twice.

Okocha’s unusual route into professional football

Okocha also revealed that he barely played in Nigeria’s domestic league before leaving the country. He said he played only twice in the Nigerian league after leaving secondary school.

His professional journey began with Rangers International of Enugu. During his final year in secondary school, Okocha played for an amateur team. That team faced Rangers in the Challenge Cup, while his elder brother represented Rangers. His performance caught the club’s attention.

“After the game, they invited me for trials,” Okocha recalled.

He passed the trial and signed for Rangers. However, his stay in the Nigerian league did not last long. Shortly after joining the club, he travelled abroad and began his international football career.

From Augustine to a global football icon

That early decision ultimately changed Okocha’s life. He went on to become one of Africa’s most entertaining footballers. His dazzling dribbling, creativity and fearless style made him a global star. The midfielder also became an inspiration to younger African footballers.

His journey shows how a simple neighbourhood nickname can become a global identity. For Okocha, “Jay Jay” started as a way to distinguish him from other Austins. Decades later, it became one of football’s most recognisable names.
