Nigerian Rapper and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known online as Falz, has flared new online discussions after questioning  statements made by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, raising concerns about the use of the popular  “Emi Lokan” slogan and the message it sends about leadership.

The controversy began after the First Lady said that President Bola Tinubu faces significant pressure in office, a comment that triggered widespread reactions on social media.

Oluremi Tinubu made the remark on Saturday, July 11, during the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Lokoja, Kogi State. At the event, she urged Afrobeats stars Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake to establish charitable foundations to support vulnerable Nigerians.

Reacting during a recent interview on Arise News, Falz strongly criticised the statement. He questioned the logic behind complaining about the pressures of leadership after actively seeking the country’s highest office.

“What do you mean, pressure on the government? Did anyone beg you to take up this work?” he asked.

“If I remember correctly, the campaign slogan of this administration was ‘Emi Lokan.’ Do you know what that means in English? It means ‘It is my turn.’ I have never seen anything more absurd than that in my entire life,” he said.

Falz argued that a leader who vigorously pursued political office should expect and accept the responsibilities and challenges that come with the position.

His comments quickly gained attention online. Many Nigerians agreed with his position, arguing that anyone who seeks leadership must be prepared to manage the pressures of governance.

Others defended the president and the First Lady, noting that President Tinubu was referring to the general public when he made that statement because the party got the message and backed him.

Falz also criticised the administration’s spending priorities. He claimed that government expenditure on vehicles, jets, and other acquisitions painted a different picture of its priorities.

The conversation has once again exposed Nigeria’s political divisions. Falz remains one of the country’s most outspoken entertainers on political and social issues, frequently using his platform to advocate for accountability, good governance, and social justice.
