A fire in the early hours of Monday morning has resulted in one person dead and another critically injured at a residential apartment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

On the morning of Monday, 20 July 2026, a young woman lost her life due to a fire outbreak at a residence on Nabor Street, off Ikpa Road, opposite Atiamkpat Street, Afaha Oku, Uyo. The incident shocked the local community and raised urgent questions about electrical safety in homes.

According to eyewitnesses and social media reports, the fire started between 4:00 am and 5:00am at No. 20 Ikpa Road, Uyo. Residents say the fire began when a socket in the room began sparking. The young woman, who was sleeping at the time, was awakened by her male companion. While trying to unplug the socket, she was electrocuted. The fire quickly spread, consuming other parts of the flat before anyone could get it under control.

The man she was with managed to escape but was left with severe burns. His condition is critical, and reports suggest he may not survive.

Akwa Ibom State Fire Service personnel arrived at the scene and finally put the fire under control after it had destroyed three rooms. The victim’s body was found inside the flat amid charred remains and burnt belongings scattered across the floor.

Unconfirmed Reports Circulating Online

Social media claims that the male survivor told those at the scene that he met the deceased at a club the night before, and they went back to the flat together before the fire started. The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed.

Was It Really Electrocution?

While eyewitnesses suggest electrocution as the cause of death, a comment gaining traction on social media questions that explanation. One user wrote: “The truth I know about electrocution is that it can’t kill you and leave you folded like that. When you’re electrocuted, you tend to stretch out due to the high current passing through you. From the picture seen, she didn’t die of electricity shock.”

Some online viewers have questioned whether electrocution alone explains what happened, based on how the victim’s body was found. Authorities have not released an official cause of death, and no forensic or medical report has been made public. Until a formal investigation is completed, the exact circumstances of the young woman’s death remain unclear.
