Hypo has cautioned the public against sharing or creating content that portrays its bleach product as a consumable drink, following viral AI-generated pictures suggesting the product comes in flavours.

The bleach brand released an official public notice on their Instagram page warning people of the dangers of abusing the cleaning disinfectant.

“We have observed people seeming to have fun creating and sharing videos and AI-generated images designed to make Hypo look like a beverage. Your health and safety is serious business. We want to be unambiguous: those images are fabricated, that framing is false, and anyone encouraging others to consume Hypo, even as a joke, even for views, is putting lives at risk. “It is not something to consume for the sake of trends,” it said.

Medical experts warn that ingesting bleach or other household cleaning agents can have serious and potentially fatal consequences. Such products contain strong chemicals designed for disinfection, not human consumption.

Swallowing them may result in severe burns to the mouth and throat, damage to the digestive tract, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In extreme cases, it can also trigger dangerous drops in blood pressure and heart rate, which may lead to shock or other life-threatening complications.

In the public notice released, the company also warned that the bleach cleans 99.9 per cent of dirt, making it very harmful to health.

“Hypo Bleach, Nigeria’s number 1 bleach brand, is formulated to remove stains, whiten your white fabric, deodorise and kill 99.9% of germs. It is not a drink. It is not something to consume for the sake of trends,” the post added.

The company also warned in the public notice that the bleach kills 99.9 percent of germs, making it very harmful to health.

“To every young Nigerian seeing this content: you do not have to prove anything to anyone. Not online, offline, or ever. If someone is pressuring you to try this, that is not a dare. That is harm. ”.

However, the statement has drawn mixed reactions online, with some users arguing that the company’s response did not sufficiently address the wider issues raised by the incident.

“Create a campaign to make Gen Z understand it’s not Cruise… the brand name is trending… instead of being too formal to address the issue of drinking it…,” one user wrote.

Why This Is Happening

The public notice follows online backlash involving influencers Mitchell Mukoro, known as King Mitchy, and Martins Vincent Otse, called VeryDarkMan, which sparked widespread conversations on social media and led to the circulation of parody content featuring the cleaning product.

According to King Mitchy, she was being bullied by VeryDarkMan, so she attempted to take her own life by drinking hypochlorite bleach. In response to the livestream of her taking the bleach, VeryDarkMan also did the same.

Due to this, netizens started generating AI images of hypo, making jokes that anyone can get one in any flavour of their choice.
