The interior minister of Ghana, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has confirmed that authorities have not yet arrested the suspected mastermind behind the seizure of suspected counterfeit foreign currency in Sapeiman, Accra.

National Security operatives carried out the intelligence-led operation in March 2025 at Sapeiman in the Ga South Municipality.

During the raid, officers intercepted 12 containers and recovered suspected counterfeit foreign currency, fake Ghana cedi notes, and suspected gold bars concealed inside a warehouse.

He explained that the main suspect escaped before authorities could make an arrest. However, prosecutors are continuing legal proceedings against the individuals already in custody.

According to the minister, the Bank of Ghana examined the foreign currency recovered during the operation and confirmed that it was counterfeit. The bank has since destroyed the fake currency.

“Unfortunately for us, the lead person in all of this had escaped, but those who were arrested are still being prosecuted. The Bank of Ghana told us that those currencies were fake, so they have destroyed them. We have not been able to get all of them, but prosecution is ongoing.”

Muntaka also said authorities are withholding the names of suspects who remain at large to avoid compromising ongoing investigations.

“We do not believe it is prudent to release their names at this stage because we have not apprehended all the suspects. However, prosecutions are ongoing,” he told the committee.
