Thousands of young Nigerians at the NYSC orientation camp in Ogun State now have a little extra breathing room. The state government has started sharing out the NYSC N50,000 palliative, a one-off payment meant to ease the cost of living during the service year.
The payment covers 3,050 members of the 2026 Batch C, Stream I, who are currently in orientation at the Sagamu camp. According to a statement from Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration signed off on the gesture.
Payments reportedly began on Monday, October 19, 2026. Each eligible corps member is to receive ₦50,000 for personal expenses and other basic needs while in camp. If every one of the 3,050 corps members is paid in full, the bill comes to ₦152.5 million.
The government says the money is meant to cushion the effect of being far from home. Many of the corps members are in a new state for the first time, with no family around them.
Ogun also approves 500 mattresses for the camp
Cash was not the only item on the list. The state also approved 500 mattresses for the Sagamu camp, which it says has come under pressure from the larger number of corps members posted to Ogun this year.
Bedding shortages at the camp are not new. During the 2024 Batch B orientation, the Ogun NYSC coordinator listed inadequate bunks and mattresses among the camp’s needs. The new donation should help ease that strain.
The government also urged the corps members to show discipline, patriotism, tolerance and selfless service, and to give something back to their host communities.

Why the NYSC N50,000 palliative matters now
Corps members already receive a monthly allowance from the federal government. The N77,000 monthly allowance was approved by the president, but many say it does not stretch far with prices where they are.
Some states have tried to fill the gap with their own top-ups. Akwa Ibom lifted its monthly state allowance from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 last year, and Zamfara has announced a ₦20,000 monthly allowance for corps members placed in schools and government offices.
Ogun is one of the busiest NYSC states in the country. Governor Abiodun has previously said the state hosts about 22,000 youths each year, and a former chairman of the NYSC Governing Council once compared the Sagamu camp to a luxury hotel because of its facilities.
For the 3,050 corps members in Sagamu this week, the NYSC N50,000 palliative is a welcome head start. Whether Ogun will turn the one-off payment into a regular state allowance has not been announced.
