Jongkuch Mach is an 18-year-old South Sudanese-Australian basketball player who is 7 feet 6 inches tall. This height surpasses that of Victor Wembanyama, exceeds all active NBA players, and is just 3 centimetres shorter than Gheorghe Mureșan and Manute Bol, the two tallest NBA players in history.

As NBA Draft analyst Nick Kalinowski wrote on X: “Standing at an absurd 7’6” at just 17 years old, Australian-South Sudanese big man Jongkuch Mach may be the most intriguing prospect in the world currently. The absurdly tall Mach is extremely mobile for a player his size, able to get up the court with ease and dunk without jumping. “

Where He Comes From

Jongkuch Mach was born on October 8, 2007, in Perth, Western Australia. His parents emigrated from South Sudan to Kenya and then to Perth, arriving when he was eleven months old. His father, Abraham, stands at 6 feet 8 inches. His grandfather was 7 feet tall. The height was always going to happen; the other question was what he would do with it.

He grew up in Perth and graduated from the inaugural class of the Perth Wildcats Academy, which, according to the scouting report platform Floor and Ceiling, had an enhanced focus on providing an elite pathway for local Indigenous and African juniors.

Wildcats Academy director Keegan Crawford described him simply as “a blank canvas,” a phrase that captures both the excitement and the uncertainty surrounding a player at this early stage of development.

What He Can Already Do

JK Mach presently competes for the BA Centre of Excellence in the NBL1 East, which is Australia’s second-tier senior league, representing the Australian Institute of Sport. At 18, he is playing senior basketball against grown men and holding his own.

His stats are modest at this point; in his 2026 NBL1 season, he averaged 2.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in just under 13 minutes per game. However, at the 2026 Australian Under-20 Championship, he showed more, averaging 7.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks over 20 minutes per game, shooting 71.4% from the field.

At the Adidas EuroCamp this year, representing NBL Next Stars, he delivered 8 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, with a +22 plus/minus and a 16 efficiency rating in his debut, which is an impressive first showing on a stage closely watched by European clubs and NBA scouts.

What the numbers do not fully capture is how he moves. Standing at 7 feet 6 inches, his mobility is the key detail that differentiates genuine intrigue from mere curiosity. He can hedge on pick-and-roll coverage and recover to the paint, he contests shots with timing and proper hand placement, and his shot-blocking instincts seem genuine rather than reactive.

His agent, Solomon Dech, told Fox Sports Australia that Mach has gained 20 kilograms in the past 12 months, which marks a significant development for a player whose frame is still a work in progress, but whose physical growth is clearly being managed intentionally.

The Challenges Ahead

JK Mach is not yet a finished product. His hands need improvement, his strength on both ends of the floor remains a key development area, and his offensive game at this stage relies heavily on finishing near the basket. The critical question every scout is watching is how much of his mobility he preserves as he adds muscle to his frame.

He has also dealt with knee issues and wears knee guards during play, which will be important to monitor as his body continues to grow and his workload increases.

The Interest He Has Already Attracted

Despite these early stages, interest has been substantial. According to Wikipedia and Floor and Ceiling, he has received college offers from Louisiana State University, Colorado, and Santa Clara, with additional interest from Charlotte, Washington State, and South Carolina, among others.

The “$1 million question” (literally, according to a Fox Sports Australia headline) is whether he takes the NCAA route or pursues professional pathways in Europe or Australia. His agent, Solomon Dech, based at Promondo Sports, has been managing his recruitment carefully.

South Sudan has become one of the most remarkable stories in international basketball in recent years, producing players like Thon Maker, Luol Deng, and others who helped Australia win bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The pipeline is real, and JK Mach is poised as the next significant name to emerge from it.

Why People Cannot Stop Talking About Him

The reason is quite simple. Tall players have existed before, and mobile tall players too. But a 7 feet 6-inch teenager who moves fluidly, contests shots with timing, runs the floor, and dunks without leaving the ground (and who may still be growing) represents something rarely seen in the sport.

The current focus is whether he will become one of the most unique players the sport has ever seen or a cautionary tale about the gap between physical gifts and actual development.
