Where most artists chase attention with a hit song, or pull one public stunt or the other, Dan Sur chased it with his head instead. The young Mexican rapper wanted a distinctive look to set himself apart, and he chose one that attracted worldwide attention. He replaced his natural hair with gold chains.

Hip-hop has always loved a flashy statement, but few have been this literal about wearing their jewellery. What looks at first like a gimmick has become the thing people remember him for.

Why Dan Sur traded his hair for gold

His explanation is refreshingly simple. In a TikTok video, Dan Sur said he “wanted to do something different” because everyone in the scene dyes their hair. He added that he hoped people would not copy him.

He described the setup in his own words. A hook is implanted in his head, he said, and that hook holds more hooks anchored in his skull under the skin. The result is what he calls his hair: “Golden hair.” He also declared himself the first rapper in history to have it.

Reports say the procedure took place in April 2021 and involved dozens of chains, some set with stones; he has not publicly shared what it cost.

It is worth noting that the “first in history” claim is his own, since that same year, Lil Uzi Vert drew headlines for a pink diamond set into his forehead.

The look sat quietly on his profile for months, then exploded in September 2021 when major outlets picked it up. Reports say his TikTok following jumped from roughly 12,000 to about two million.

Not everyone believed him. Some viewers wondered whether the chains were plastic or the surgery was real. Dan Sur answered with a TikTok showing the chains sinking in a glass of water, an unscientific test that still satisfied plenty of fans.

Medical experts were less impressed, though. Plastic surgeon Dr Frank Agullo told Yahoo Life that such implants invite bacteria and that the weight, or one hard tug, could dislodge a hook and even fracture the skull. Dermatologist Dr Mona Gohara warned of scarring, inflammation and permanent hair loss, and both suggested a gold-threaded wig or weave instead.

Social media was split between fascination and horror, which is exactly the kind of reaction an artist wanting to stand out is hoping for.

Who is Dan Sur?

Dan Sur is a Mexican rapper, producer and social media personality. Sources suggest he was born around 1998, though his early life is thinly documented. Some profiles say he goes by Dan Sur El Anunnaki, and at least one Italian outlet reports that he later moved to the United States.

His path was a digital one. He started a YouTube channel in 2016, first experimenting with online content, and by 2019 he was releasing music there. Reggaeton-leaning tracks such as “Sigo” and “Bonk Bonk” won him a modest following.

Before the gold, he wore long black braids, often decorated with jewellery. Looking back, that was a hint of where his taste was heading.

Dan Sur’s online personality is confident, cheeky and a little theatrical. He posts mostly in Spanish and treats the chains as both costume and comedy. He has shown himself removing the chains to sleep, snipping one off, and holding hair clippers to the strands as a joke.

Dan Sur also likes a bit of rivalry. One caption poked fun at rappers who dye their hair, dismissing them as clones of 6ix9ine. The gold does not stop at his scalp, either, since gold teeth and chunky chains around the neck regularly appear in his posts.

Perhaps the most human moment came during a TikTok challenge, when he showed fans a glimpse of his natural hair before going back to the chains. It reminded people that the look is a choice and not a necessity.

The look that became the brand

Years on, the gold chain hair is still the first thing people mention when they hear Dan Sur’s name. It works as a logo in human form, instantly recognisable in a thumbnail or a crowded timeline.

Whether you find it brilliant or baffling, the strategy worked: he turned one dramatic decision into an identity that is impossible to confuse with anyone else’s. The music keeps coming, but the hair keeps people watching.
