A male passenger lost his life on Sunday after leaping from a moving commercial bus that crashed into a median pole in Surulere, Lagos.
The accident, which occurred at Ogunlana Junction along Ojuelegba, involved a Volkswagen commercial bus. The bus with registration number LND 130 XR was reportedly driven recklessly before it crashed into a median pole.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and operating the vehicle recklessly. The uncontrolled movement of the bus created panic among other motorists and passengers. 
In the confusion, one male passenger jumped from the still-moving vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape. He hit the ground hard, sustained serious injuries, and later died from those injuries.

Official Response from LASTMA
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed the incident, saying officers on routine surveillance along the Ojuelegba axis quickly arrived at the scene. They secured the area, managed traffic flow, and removed both the damaged bus and the remains of the deceased to prevent any secondary collision.
Personnel from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security cover, while officials of the State Emergency Management Agency took away the body from the scene.
Bakare-Oki described the crash as another reminder of the risks posed by driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless motoring, and the use of faulty vehicles.
Safety Call to Road Users
LASTMA urged both commercial and private motorists to carry out thorough mechanical checks before setting out. It advised paying special attention to brakes, tyres, steering systems and other critical safety components.
The agency also encouraged the public to report accidents, breakdowns and other traffic incidents promptly through its toll-free short code 3367.
Road crashes remain a regular and deadly feature of Lagos traffic. Cases involving alleged drunk drivers and passengers forced into desperate actions continue to claim lives.
