Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele was born into a family of four (the second child); she was a self-described “rebellious backbencher” in school. Her father was a reverend/principal died in 2019 and her mother a doctor died in 2023.

She holds a National Diploma in Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and a law degree from the University of Lagos.

Funke is the mother to twin boys, Zack and Zion (born in 2018) with JJC Skills, and stepmother to children from previous marriages.

In February 2026, she shared photos and videos on social media showing her, her twin sons, and a boy she identified as her adopted son while in London. His name was not revealed.

She is very particular about her biological children’s privacy as she keeps their faces hidden.

Funke Akindele’s Ex-Husbands

Kehinde Oloyede

Funke discussed her failed marriage to politician Kehinde Oloyede in a candid interview with E-47. She got married on 26 May 2012 and divorced in in July 2013. She revealed that she only found happiness in the first two months of the marriage, after which she experienced severe emotional and verbal abuse.

Despite initially believing that the issues could be resolved, she ultimately decided to end the marriage when the troubles became overwhelming.

Abdulrasheed Bello

Akindele married Nigerian rapper JJC Skillz (Abdulrasheed Bello) in London in May 2016. Her pregnancy became one of the top searches on Google in August 2017.

JJC Skillz announced their separation in 2022 via an Instagram post after six years, revealing that their marriage had faced issues for over two years before it ended. He confirmed that Akindele had requested him to leave her residence and declined to discuss their relationship further.

Career Milestones

Her 2008 film Jenifa became a cultural phenomenon, leading to an AMAA Best Actress award (2009) and the massive spin-off series Jenifa’s Diary, which ran for 28 seasons.

Funke Akindele has 5 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Best Actress in a Comedy, with wins in 2014 (The Return of Sheri Koko), 2016 & 2017 (Jenifa’s Diary), 2020 (Moms At War), and 2022 (Omo Ghetto: The Saga). She’s the most-awarded Nigerian actress.

She made her directorial debut with Your Excellency (2019). She is a voting member of the Academy (Oscars) and was named one of the most influential women in international film by The Hollywood Reporter in 2025.

Akindele is the only director in Nollywood history with three consecutive ₦1B+ films. Behind the Scenes (2025) became the first Nollywood film to cross ₦2 billion, while Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024) surpassed ₦1.4 billion.
