“Some moments transcend words.” That is how Folake Olowofoyeku, the Nigerian-born actress best known as Abishola on the CBS sitcom Bob Co Hearts Abishola, described one of the greatest honors of her life.
On July 29, 2026 she announced that she had been bestowed the traditional titles of Yeye Oba of Imo Kingdom and Yeye Atayase in Osun State, Nigeria. The announcement, shared with a glimpse of the ceremony, marked a full-circle moment for someone who has long carried the Yoruba culture with heads high onto American screens.
Yeye Oba translates literally to “Mother of the King” or an equivalent high-ranking royal mother of the palace. With that title, the holder becomes a respected female elder and pillar who supports the royal house, promotes unity and assists in women and social development initiatives associated with the kingdom. While Yeye Atayase means the “Mother who mends or improves the world/community.” Functionally, the holder is honored for community development, philanthropy, or championing progressive causes that uplift the social well-being of the land.

Bob Hearts Abishola which premiered on CBS in September 2019 and ran for five seasons until May 2024, introduced millions of viewers to Abishola’s world of strict aunties, high educational expectations, Yoruba proverbs, and quiet strength. The titles she has now received affirm that those same values are recognized at home.
What made the series distinctive was its affectionate, specific portrayal of Nigerian (especially Yoruba) family life, values, faith, and immigrant ambition alongside classic American sitcom humor. Folake’s performance as the dignified, principled, occasionally sharp-tongued Abishola earned praise for authenticity; she became one of the most visible Nigerian characters on U.S. network television.
Folake Olowofoyeku was born on October 26, 1983 in Lagos, Nigeria, the youngest of about twenty siblings. Her father was Chief Babatunji Olowofoyeku, a prominent Yoruba politician, lawyer, educationist, and public servant from llesha in Osun State. Instead of following the family established path of law and politics she quietly pursued theatre studies at City College of New York. She later added audio-engineering training and moved into acting and music.
