Bella Shmurda, a Nigerian singer, has called out his contemporaries in Nigeria and other Africa at large for failing to attend local award ceremonies while spending millions to attend international award shows such as the Grammys.

The artist expressed his thoughts on the absence of of many renowned Nigerian and African artists from the Headies Awards. He questioned why artists who spend so much money to attend international award ceremonies cannot do the same to support African award shows. He said:

“These people in Nigeria wouldn’t want to come for Headies Award but they can spend millions to go to the Grammy’s. They can take private jet to go to whatever award they want to go to but they can’t come home, they can’t spend or invest that money and come to our African Awards and we call ourselves blacks.”

“Last last, you take this award and you say shout out to my African people. You are not shouting out to us, keep your shout out. We have our awards here, why are you not here? You are not real. Leave the shout out, it’s for yourself. You are not shouting out to us.

Singer Challenges Artists Who Snub African Award Ceremonies

“We have our Headies Award, MOBO Awards, AFRIMA. You aren’t taking jet down there. You don’t want to perform. They call you to perform, you say that you are too big, but when you go those places, you want to tag Africans along like you are representing Africa.

“If you are representing Africa, you will be at the an Africa award.”

Bella Shmurda’s comments focused on the need for African artists to support award ceremonies on the continent, rather than only showing their support for Africa when they attend international events.

He also questioned artists who claim to represent Africa but do not attend or perform at major African award ceremonies.
