I gained weight over the holidays, and honestly, that’s expected. Between family gatherings, festive meals, late-night meals and alcohol, weight gain was inevitable.

Before you start beating yourself up or rushing into extreme diets, the first thing you should do is to stop feeling bad about it.

Weight gain during the holidays is normal, and for many people, it’s temporary. Once I accepted that, it became easier to choose a calmer, healthier approach to losing the extra kilograms.

1. I Focus on Simple, Balanced Meals

Rather than cutting out entire food groups, I went back to basics:

  • More vegetables on my plate
  • Enough protein to keep me full
  • Carbs in sensible portions
  • Less snacking just out of habit

2. I Drink More Water Than Anything Else

After weeks of sugary drinks and rich meals, hydration makes a huge difference. Drinking enough water helps reduce bloating, improves digestion, and even curbs unnecessary snacking.

3. I Started Moving Gently

I didn’t jump into intense workouts immediately. I started with walking, stretching, and light home workouts. Moving my body helped boost my mood and energy, which makes it easier to stay consistent.

The goal with this is not to “burn off” food; it’s to rebuild a routine.

4. I Fixed My Sleep Schedule

Staying out late during the holidays affected my energy, appetite, and focus. Getting back to regular sleep helped regulate hunger cues and reduced cravings.

Good sleep made every other healthy habit easier to maintain.

5. I Stopped Chasing Quick Results

I remind myself that the weight didn’t come on overnight, so it wouldn’t disappear overnight either. Slow progress is more sustainable and far less stressful.

Instead of obsessing over the scale, I pay attention to:

  • How my clothes fit
  • My energy levels
  • How I feel mentally and physically

It’s just been a few days, but some days are better than others, and that’s okay. One heavy meal or missed workout won’t undo everything. I simply return to my routine the next day.

In conclusion, losing your holiday weight doesn’t require extreme diets; it starts with realistic habits, and patience.

If you gained weight over the holidays, you’re not alone. There’s no need to panic, just start where you are.
