Brighton’s Malick Yalcouyé: The Medical Reason Behind His Mature Look at 20

Is Malick Yalcouyé Really 20, or Is It a Case of Age Fraud? Here’s what ASEC Mimosas and medical reports say.

When 20-year-old Malick Yalcouyé scored for Brighton & Hove Albion against Chelsea, the online conversation moved quickly. Not about his technique or his movement, but his appearance. The Ivorian midfielder’s noticeably receding hairline had fans questioning his claimed age, with some suggesting he had altered his date of birth.

This is a claim that has followed African footballers for years, but in this case, it is incorrect.

The Medical Explanation

According to Dobe Aboubacar, Yalcouyé lives with chronic alopecia, a condition causing persistent, long-term hair loss. It can be triggered by various underlying factors. The most recognised form is androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male-pattern baldness. It can also begin in early adulthood regardless of a person’s true age.

In Yalcouyé’s case, his hairline is a health concern, not a sign of being older than his records indicate. This distinction is important, especially given how easily this type of allegation is linked to African players in European football without evidence.

What the Records Show

His former club, ASEC Mimosas, addressed the age question directly by releasing images from Yalcouyé’s time at their Abidjan academy, Académie MimoSifcom, between 2018 and 2023. In those photos, he appears alongside players from the same age group: Newcastle’s Bazoumana Touré, Reims’ Oumar Diakité, and RB Salzburg’s Karim Konaté.

The structure at ASEC is significant because players are grouped in cohorts with gaps of just one to three years between age groups, which means the company he kept at the academy supports his documented age. He was not an outlier in a younger group but was with his peers.

The Football Tells the Real Story

Beyond the speculation, Yalcouyé’s rise in the game has been swift and well-documented.

Brighton signed him from Swedish side IFK Göteborg last summer for roughly £6 million, a fee that stands out because Göteborg had only acquired him in February 2024 for around €400,000. This rapid progression reflects how quickly his potential has been recognised in European football.

Before joining Brighton, he moved from the under-21 squad through loan spells at Sturm Graz and Swansea before breaking into the first team. The goal against Chelsea was his first Premier League start, announcing him on one of the bigger stages with clarity.

The receding hairline may make Malick Yalcouyé appear older than he is, but his records, the academy timeline, and the medical explanation all point consistently to the same conclusion: that he is genuinely 20 years old.
