A Nigerian man has died following an alleged encounter with South African police officers during a raid in Bellville, Cape Town, on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has officially identified the deceased as Ibeh Chika Simon, from Abia State. The incident took place at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville.
According to members of the Nigerian community in South Africa and videos circulating on social media, officers were conducting what witnesses described as a drug search operation at the complex when the incident occurred. 
Footage shared online appears to show officers restraining Chika Ibe in what witnesses described as a brutal manner. In one clip, an officer is allegedly seen using what appears to be a polyethene bag to suffocate him repeatedly. Separate footage from the scene shows another Nigerian man with a visible gunshot wound to the mouth.
The Nigerian community claims that Chika was subjected to severe beating, torture, and inhuman treatment during the operation. A second Nigerian man, identified by the Nigerian Consulate as Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot during the same operation and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.
Footage later showed South African police officers removing the body of the alleged victim from the complex. Members of the Nigerian community present identified him as Chika Ibe.

Official Responses
The South African Police Service has denied the allegations and stated that the case is under investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, known as IPID (the body mandated to investigate misconduct and criminal offences by South African police), has confirmed it has opened a formal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the incident and called for an immediate, transparent investigation. In a statement, the government emphasised that no allegation against a suspect justifies excessive force and that every individual is entitled to due process under the law.
The Nigeria Citizens Association South Africa, NICASA, has also called for an urgent independent investigation by IPID. NICASA identified the deceased as Chika Ibe from Abia State and alleged he was beaten and suffocated during the operation.

Part of a Wider Pattern
Chika Ibe’s death occurs amidst escalating concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa. According to reports, at least five Nigerians have been reported killed in 2026 amid a combination of xenophobic attacks and alleged police brutality.
The other victims named include Amaramiro Emmanuel, Ekpenyong Andrew, Emeka Charles Iroegbu, and Musa Yunana Joe. Some deaths have been linked to xenophobic mob violence, while others involve allegations directly implicating security forces.
Chika Ibe is now the latest name on the list.
