President Bola Tinubu marked Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration by conferring national honours on 50 Nigerians whose contributions helped shape the country’s democratic journey.
The honours, announced during his June 12 address, recognised a broad mix of pro-democracy activists, journalists, lawyers, political figures, and public servants who played different roles in the struggle against military rule and the advancement of democratic governance. Some received the recognition posthumously, while others were honoured for contributions that stretched across decades.
Among the names that caught many Nigerians by surprise on President Bola Tinubu’s 2026 Democracy Day honours list was Jenkins Alumona. 
President Tinubu included him among dozens of Nigerians recognised for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and public life.
Jenkins Alumona’s Decades of Impact
Jenkins Alumona is a marketing communications practitioner, entrepreneur, journalist, and boxing promoter.
He currently serves as the chief executive officer of Strategic Outcomes Limited, a marketing, public relations, and media company that includes NBG Africa as a subsidiary. Alumona is also the driving force behind GOtv Boxing Night, one of Nigeria’s biggest boxing events, and chairs the Lagos State Boxing Association.
Over the course of his career, he has worked with several major organisations, including The Guardian, TheNEWS magazine, The Quadrant Company, Econet Wireless Nigeria, and Globacom, where he served as a Principal Manager in the Brand Communications Department.
Alumona also played a significant role in Nigerian journalism during the country’s transition from military rule. He served as editor of TheNEWS magazine for much of the final years of the military administration; a period when journalists often faced censorship, harassment, and pressure for reporting on governance and pro-democracy issues.
Academically, he holds a degree in Mass Communication and a Master’s degree in Marketing. He is an alumnus of both Harvard Business School and Lagos Business School, and is also a Fellow of the Bucerius Summer School on Global Governance in Hamburg, Germany.
His inclusion on the honours list appears to be connected to that earlier chapter of his career. He worked as a frontline journalist during the military era, which earned him a months-long detention.
Although the Presidency has not yet released the specific category of honour awarded to each recipient, Tinubu’s citation makes it clear that the recognition is tied to contributions made toward the defence and advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
As the government prepares to release the full honours categories, Jenkins Alumona now joins a list of Nigerians whose contributions have earned formal recognition from the Presidency during this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
