Muluwork Ambaw is a woman from Ethiopia who claimed to have not eaten any food or drunk any water for about 16 years.

She was roughly 26 years old at the time of the claim in 2024. In an interview with traveller and content creator Drew Binsky, she said the phenomenon began when she was about 10 years old. Ambaw allegedly lost her appetite for food or water one morning. After her last claimed meal, which was injera with lentil stew as a child, she has not had any food or water.

Mr Belachew was the first to discover her “fast”. She was tested in one of the biggest hospitals in Addis Ababa, the country’s capital. Zewditu Hospital testified that there were no traces of food remnants in her intestine.

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia also became interested and sent her to Dubai for further testing and confirmation of the claims.

“Yes, I’ve seen a doctor abroad. They tested me for a week. They even questioned my mental status. They thought I was crazy, but I’m intact,” she said through an interpreter.

She reportedly lives in Jimma, Ethiopia. At the time of the interview, she was a mother of one. Ambaw said to keep the child alive and healthy, she was given glucose.

She looked very healthy for someone who had not had food or water for 16 whole years, and goes about her day like every normal person. Ambaw said she believes it is God’s work and natural that she has energy for daily activities. She also doesn’t think there will be a day she will regain her appetite and be hungry again.

As an Orthodox Christian, she claimed she doesn’t even drink the “holy water” usually drunk in her church.

Muluwork also added that the only reason she goes to the bathroom is to wash her body, not for anything else. No “number one” or “number two” for 16 years!

The Eatwell Guide advises people to aim to drink six to eight cups or glasses of fluid a day. Depending on several factors, such as how active you are, women are supposed to eat around 2,000 calories a day, while men should consume about 2,500 calories.

Also, according to Healthline, the maximum amount of time the body can survive without food or water is one week. But Ambaw has defied this, having stayed more than 835 weeks without food or water.
