United Bank for Africa (UBA) has appointed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new chairman, succeeding Tony Elumelu after his 12-year tenure as Group Chairman.
With more than 40 years of experience in financial services, auditing, banking, and corporate leadership, Nnorom has built an extensive career across leading financial institutions and publicly listed companies.
Education
Nnorom studied at Templeton College, Oxford University. He is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). He also holds honorary membership and fellowship status with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
Family Background
Beyond his accomplishments, Nnorom is also a family man. He is married to Florence Ihuoma Nnorom, and together they have four children.
Nnorom’s father was a significant influence in his formative years, disciplining him for joining the Scripture Union as a child, a decision that marked Nnorom’s early commitment to Christianity. This religious awakening, which occurred in post-independence Nigeria amidst the country’s changing socioeconomic landscape, had a profound impact on his values, leading him to become an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Yaba and emphasising evangelism throughout his life.
Nnorom’s childhood was shaped by community ties in his hometown of Ovim, where local traditions and Christian fellowships provided valuable early experiences. These religious and communal roots influenced his approach to business ethics and leadership.

His career at UBA included several senior leadership positions, including Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director, and Managing Director. As Chief Operating Officer, he oversaw the bank’s operations outside Nigeria and executed UBA’s corporate strategy across 18 African countries.
Over the years, Nnorom has gained extensive experience working with publicly listed companies across the banking, corporate, and financial sectors. His expertise spans corporate governance, business strategy, financial management, and operational leadership.
His appointment as UBA Chairman marks a new chapter for the bank as it seeks to build on the foundation established during Tony Elumelu’s leadership.
