The UK government has announced a transition to electronic visas (e-visas) by 2026, thereby eliminating physical visa stickers.
Starting January 12, 2026, people granted a UK visitor’s visa, along with select other visa categories, will receive an e-visa along with their existing visa sticker. From February 25, 2026, all visitors to the UK requiring a visa will exclusively get e-visas.
However, those with valid stickers issued before this date will be able to access their digital immigration status through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
What’s a UK eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital representation of a person’s identity and immigration status; it includes details like the type of visa held or if one has indefinite leave to remain in the UK. It also includes the conditions tied to this status, such as permissions to work or study within the UK.
The implementation of eVisas is part of a broader government initiative to replace traditional physical immigration documents. For instance, biometric residence permits (BRPs) have already transitioned to eVisa formats, with plans to phase out other forms like biometric residence cards (BRCs) and traditional stamps or vignettes in passports in the works.
