Armed bandits have reportedly stopped a vehicle carrying passengers back from Sokoto City and opened fire on those inside. The latest Sokoto bandits attack happened on the road leading to Isa Local Government Area on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026.

The passengers were said to be heading home when the gunmen stopped them. The incident first spread through Bakatsine, a conflict reporter who covers security issues in the North-West. They shared the news along with photographs of some of the victims.

His account said everyone in the vehicle was killed. That figure has not been confirmed, and the identities of the people in the photographs have not been independently verified.

Sokoto bandits attack: Police give a different toll

The Sokoto State Police Command has put the number lower. Its spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed that three people died in the attack, a driver and two others. He said it happened at Kunawa village in Goronyo Local Government Area, along the Marnona-Isa Road.

Reports say the vehicle was travelling from Sokoto metropolis towards Isa when the attackers stopped it and shot at the people inside. The difference between the police figure and the earlier claims has not been explained, so the full number of casualties remains unclear.

Victims may have been government recruits

Some of the passengers were reportedly among the 3,000 people recruited by the Sokoto State Government, who had been invited for more screening and to collect their documents. That detail comes from unconfirmed reports. Neither the state government nor the police has publicly confirmed it.

If it holds, the attack would have caught people returning home after a visit tied to a job opportunity.

The attack has once again raised questions about travel safety in Sokoto State and across the North-West. In March this year, bandits intercepted a bus along the Mayanchi axis in Zamfara. The bus belonged to the Sokoto State Transport Authority, was carrying 16 passengers from Abuja to Sokoto, and one person was shot dead.

The state has seen worse. In December 2021, gunmen ambushed a bus between Sabon Birni and Gidan Bawa and set it on fire, killing about 30 people.

For people who live along these routes, a trip to the state capital or a market can still end in tragedy.

Sokoto bandits attack: What happens next

As of Thursday, the exact toll and the identities of the victims had not been confirmed. The police have not said whether arrests have been made or how security on the Marnona-Isa Road will change.

We will update this report when more details come in.
