The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has arraigned Net Naija CEO, Emmanuel Analike, on multiple counts of copyright infringement. The NCC says NetNaija commercially distributed copyrighted movies, TV shows, and music without permission from the appropriate quarters.

NetNaija is one of the most popular entertainment download sites in Nigeria and across Africa. This suggests that the alleged infringement was neither minor nor accidental.

Every time downloads are made for free on websites like NetNaija, filmmakers, producers, and distributors lose revenue, and authorities view this as profiting from illegal distribution.

Below are some other websites that have been linked to movie piracy:

1. FMovies

FMovies was launched in 2016 and has since then been popular for allowing people to watch free movies online. Although it has been taken down by different countries, it still operates in some and in clones.

2. 123Movies

Efforts have been made to shut down 123Movies as a streaming platform after it attracted millions of users, but several clones still appear online today.

3. 9jarocks

Popular among the Nigerian audience, 9jarocks is known to distribute different genres of movies, TV shows, and music without requiring a subscription.

4. Tamilrockers

Tamilrockers is popular for distributing Indian movies illegally. Since it went offline, other clones like TamilMV and TamilBlaster are still being tracked to be taken down.

5. YTS

This one is popular with limited internet bandwidth users because it is known for distributing movies compressed into small file sizes yet maintaining high video quality.

The Crime and Moral Dilemma of Pirated Movies

Actors, filmmakers, editors and producers depend on the support of the audience through legitimate platforms like cinemas, YouTube and Netflix. While piracy may make movies easily accessible, using them contributes to copyright infringement. So, both the people who upload the movies and those who watch them are committing criminal offences and may get into trouble, just like the CEO of Net Naija.

By avoiding piracy sites, viewers play a role in protecting creative work and supporting the future of film.
