There is a particular kind of silence that speaks loudly on Nigerian social media. It is the silence of someone who has said too much in the past and now has nothing to say in the present.
That is where Laura Ikeji finds herself this week.
What the Internet Is Saying
Nigerian influencer and entrepreneur Laura Ikeji has come under public attention following reports linking her husband, Ogbonna Kanu, to an alleged affair scandal. According to reports making the rounds, Ogbonna Kanu allegedly told a 23-year-old woman who had just moved to Nigeria that he was single. They reportedly dated for about eight months and got intimate, and the situation escalated further until one of the woman’s friends recognised him and informed her that he was married to a public figure.
When the woman allegedly confronted him, he travelled and went silent. When she tried reaching him again, she was told he had died. He had not died. According to the woman, the former footballer had misled her into believing he was single before persuading her to visit him, an encounter that ultimately led to the leaked material now circulating online.
This is not the first time Ogbonna Kanu has faced infidelity allegations. He was previously married to a British woman, Hannah Turay, and in 2013, she reportedly took him to court over an infidelity claim, a case he reportedly lost assets over. On the Real Housewives of Lagos, Laura herself revealed that Ogbonna had cheated on her with her best friend while they were still dating.
The pattern, in other words, is not new. What is new is the tape.
What Laura Said Before All of This
Here is where it gets complicated. Because Laura Ikeji has not been quiet about cheating in the past. She has been very, very loud about it.
In September 2024, Laura expressed her displeasure with women who pray for their cheating husbands, asking what exactly the prayer was meant to accomplish. She stated that cheating back and suggested women should curse their husbands instead of praying for them.
She went further. She also advised women not to leave their unfaithful husbands, saying she would not leave hers, though she acknowledged other women may make their own decisions. She also warned that women who leave their cheating husbands sometimes end up dating other women’s husbands.
And then there is the older clip, the one that has been circulating alongside the current scandal with a particularly sharp energy. In the clip, Laura said Nigerian married men are the most generous men in the world and that if you date a rich Nigerian married man, you will likely become rich because they are so generous. She added, sarcastically, that a Nigerian man who is not cheating on his wife does not look cool.
That last line. That is the one the internet pulled out of storage this week.

The Response — or Lack of It
Amid the backlash, Laura shared a post on Instagram promoting her brand. Nigerians flooded the comment section immediately. “Is he dead or alive?” wrote one user. “Everywhere dey hot, my lady is posting her business,” wrote another. “Everywhere quiet,” said a third.
As of the time of this report, neither Laura Ikeji nor Ogbonna Kanu has publicly addressed the allegations.
The silence is loud. The comment sections are louder.

The Bigger Conversation
There is something worth sitting with here beyond the gossip. Laura Ikeji has spent years building a public persona around marital loyalty, surviving betrayal, and choosing to stay. She talked about it on a reality show. She gave advice about it online. She made it part of who she is as a public figure.
That kind of visibility is an asset, until the story catches up with the advice.
Nigeria’s internet has a long memory and very little mercy for irony. The clips are out. The quotes are out. The alleged tape is out. And Laura Ikeji, the woman who told wives to curse their cheating husbands and stay anyway, is currently saying nothing at all.
Whether she speaks eventually or continues to post brand content into the storm, the conversation has already moved past her. The internet has already written the caption.
But on her socials, “Everywhere is quiet.”
