The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to work together on the proposed 24/7 Energy Zones pilot programme.
The initiative aims to improve electricity supply across Lagos, particularly in areas with high commercial and industrial demand.
Lagos to Launch 24/7 Energy Zones Pilot
The Ministry of Power said President Bola Tinubu approved the pilot programme, which will begin in Lagos. It will later expand to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors.
The initiative seeks to create a framework for delivering more reliable electricity to major commercial and industrial centres.
The ministry announced the development on Monday after a high-level technical meeting between Power Minister Joseph Tegbe and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The meeting was held at Lagos House in Marina.
DisCos Commit to Improved Power Supply
According to Tegbe, the Ministry of Power has engaged electricity distribution companies over the programme.
He said the DisCos had agreed to increase the amount of electricity they take and distribute to customers along the Lagos corridor. The minister added that the commitment would help provide more consistent and reliable electricity to consumers.
Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to addressing challenges within the electricity market. He stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to develop practical solutions to the sector’s problems.

Joint Committee to Drive Implementation
The meeting also approved steps to move the Energy Zones programme from planning to implementation. One of the key decisions was the creation of a joint technical committee.
The committee will identify and address outstanding technical and operational challenges. It will also recommend additional measures needed to ensure the successful rollout of the initiative.

FG Targets Major Commercial Centres
The Federal Government had earlier begun talks with DisCos on establishing Energy Zones across major demand centres. The zones are expected to provide 24-hour electricity to households, businesses and industries.
Tegbe recently held a closed-door meeting with executives of selected DisCos to discuss the proposed programme. The discussions focused on Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.
The government designed the initiative to tackle distribution bottlenecks within the power sector. It also aims to ensure electricity generated and transmitted through the national grid reaches consumers more reliably.
The focus is particularly on locations with high commercial and industrial electricity demand.
