Imagine investing time and money into your skincare routine only to find out that your skin doesn’t care. Skincare is expensive; it should work yet, that’s not always the case. I spent thousands of naira on my skin, bought all the viral products, yet failed to achieve that smooth, glassy, and dewy skin. In short, my skin conditions worsened. Just like me, you may be tempted to think your skincare products simply aren’t working when you might be doing many things wrong. Here’s a breakdown of the common culprits.
1. I Bought Fake Products
Fake skincare is as dangerous as fake drugs, with drastic consequences such as skin cancer and permanent burns. One time I bought a fake product and my complexion changed drastically. Sadly, there are a lot of fake products out there, even from your trusted online vendors.
How to Spot Fake Skincare
An easy way to spot the fake is to go to the company’s website and really take a look at the original packaging. Pay close attention to how text is placed, the font size, and other details. If possible, buy from the manufacturer or authorised distributors.
2. My Beddings and Towels Were Dirty

Before I hear you complain about your skin, I have a simple question for you: when was the last time you washed your bedsheets, pillowcase, and towel? These fabrics can be stockpiling so much dirt and microorganisms that your skincare will surely not work.
A study by Amerisleep found that: “After one week, pillowcases and sheets contain between three million and five million CFUs (colony-forming units) per square inch. After four weeks without washing, both pillowcases and sheets may contain millions of colony-forming units (CFUs) per square inch.”
How Often to Wash Bedding and Towels
Experts say wash them at least once a week.
3. I Was Stressed
If you are under immense mental and physical stress, it will show on your skin. The way you feel on the inside affects how you look on the outside. I remember when I was worried and not sleeping well, I began seeing many fine lines on my forehead, and my eyes were swollen and dark.
Take care of your mental health and get enough sleep if you want your skincare to work.
How to Care for Your Skin if You Are Stressed
Take warm baths, meditate, do relaxing exercises, and sleep deeply and for long hours at night.
4. I Took Unhealthy Food and Drinks
Surprise! The food and drinks matter so much when it comes to skincare. If you are eating unhealthy food and drinking alcohol and sugary drinks, you shouldn’t be spending so much on your skin.
The Best Food and Drinks for Your Skin
Drink a lot of water, take ginger shots, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables like tomatoes and avocado.
5. I Didn’t See a Dermatologist
You may have a specific skin condition, so generic skincare advice may not work. Until I sought professional advice, I was shooting blanks in the air. Visit a dermatologist so you can get a tailored skincare product specifically for your skin.
