A group of 300-level Computer Engineering students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has built something genuinely worth paying attention to. An electronic walking stick has been designed to help visually impaired people move around more safely and independently.

The device caught people’s attention after a demonstration video was shared on X on September 2, 2026. In the footage, one of the student developers walks a small audience through how the stick works. He tested it outdoors in real conditions. He display exactly how the walking stick responds to different hazards in a user’s path. 

How It Works

What makes this stick more than just a regular walking aid is the sensor system built into it. It does not just detect obstacles but actually tells the user what kind of obstacle they are dealing with.

If something solid is blocking the path ahead, the stick responds with a short vibration and an audible alert. This gives the user time to adjust their direction before making contact.

If there is a hole or a sudden drop in the ground, which is the kind of hazard that carries a real risk of injury, the stick triggers a longer, louder sound to signal that the danger is more serious.

When the tip touches water, three quick beeps go off immediately so the user knows exactly what they have encountered.

There is also an emergency feature built in which is a push button connected to a built-in SIM card. It allows the user to send an SMS to a pre-registered caregiver or emergency contact with a single press. 

This means no navigating a phone screen under pressure, no need to unlock anything, just one button, and help is on the way.

What Comes Next

The team isn’t just stopping here, they have already mapped out upgrades for future versions, with real-time GPS tracking at the top of the list. This would allow caregivers to monitor a user’s location through a mobile app.

They also plan to add a battery monitoring feature that sends a low-power alert before the device shuts down. This is to ensure the battery never fails a user mid-journey without warning.

The Reaction

The video drew widespread praise across Nigerian social media, with commenters calling the invention impressive and practical.

A lot of people made the same point; that this is exactly the kind of work university students should be doing: identifying a real problem that affects real people and building something that actually helps.

The students explained that their device’s primary aim is straightforward: to make movement safer and to empower visually impaired individuals to navigate their environment more confidently on their own terms.
