Kenyan author and passionate reader Emmanuel Muchui has successfully completed a 73-hour nonstop reading marathon in Nairobi.
He says he undertook the challenge to revive and promote a strong reading culture across Kenya.
The marathon started on Friday, January 16, at 10:05 am and ended on Monday, January 19, at 3:51 pm, at Nuria Book Store in Nairobi.
Over the three-day period, Muchui read 17 books, earning admiration from book lovers, educators, and social media users across the country.

According to Muchui, the initiative was not about breaking global records but about sending a strong message on the importance of reading in an age dominated by screens.

He noted that increasing screen time has gradually replaced book reading, especially among young people, and he hopes his effort will inspire Kenyans of all ages to reconnect with books.
In a video shared by Nuria Book Store, which hosted and supported the marathon, the bookstore confirmed that Muchui completed the challenge as planned. The store also revealed that the marathon helped promote African literature and spotlight Muchui’s four self-published books.
Speaking after completing the challenge, Muchui described the experience as mentally demanding but fulfilling.
“There were times I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish, but I am grateful that today at 3:51 pm I completed the 73 hours. It was a huge challenge that required a lot of mental strength and perseverance,” he said.
Muchui also expressed gratitude to Nuria Book Store for hosting him and ensuring his well-being throughout the challenge.
