Popular Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, fondly known as Omije Ojumi, has died. Her death has shocked the gospel music community and left fans across the country in mourning.
She rose to prominence with “Omije Ojumi”, a song that became a favourite in churches across Nigeria. She later released other songs, including “O Ti Sure”, which also became popular.
Her colleague, Ayo Melody, announced the sad news on Tuesday via Instagram on behalf of the family. The post, which included a photograph and a short video clip, confirmed that the singer died in a Lagos hospital on 12th January 2026.
It read in part:
“With great sadness 💔😭 we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye OMIJE OJUMI, passed away on 12th January, 2026 at Lagos hospital, Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”

What Killed ‘Omije Ojumi’?
Although the family did not disclose the cause of death, Akinnaanu had earlier spoken publicly about an ongoing health challenge. A few months before her passing, she sought prayers over her leg that was swollen.
In October 2025, during a service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, a video showed the gospel artiste seated with her leg stretched out on a chair while a cleric prayed for her.

During the service, the pastor spoke about the leg and described the condition as a spiritual attack. He prayed against what he termed the “spirit of death”, asking it to leave her body.
According to reports, the singer took ill around 2025, and despite several efforts to restore her health, she did not recover. However, there has been no confirmation that the ailment was directly linked to her death.
Just a day before the announcement of her death, popular cleric Pastor Segun Arole raised public concern about her condition on Instagram. In an emotional post, he asked:
“Where is Singer Omije Oju mi? We heard that she was sick, and we donated money. You can’t tell us to be praying without knowing her condition… This woman must not die.”
The deceased began singing at a young age and later made a decision to leave a banking career to pursue gospel music full-time.
