Nigerian singer Sola Allyson, 54, has never followed the conventional path, she was born into a Muslim family and originally named Rasheedat. She grew up practising Islam before later being exposed to Christianity and other religions.
Her spiritual curiosity led her to explore multiple faith traditions, from Buddhism to Christian denominations and perhaps, this has shaped her into an artist who values personal conviction over labels.
In a new interview on Oyinmomo TV, Allyson opened up about her music, faith, marriage, and identity with unusual honesty. Here are the biggest things she revealed: 
1. She Doesn’t Call Herself a Gospel Artist
Despite how her songs are often categorised, Allyson maintains that she is not a gospel artist.
“I don’t sing religious songs… I don’t call myself a gospel artiste. My name is Sola Allyson. I am a singer.”
She said people only assume otherwise because her music feels spiritual.
2. Why She Doesn’t Mention “Jesus” in Her Songs
She avoids using the name “Jesus” in her music because, according to her, it does not align with her understanding of sincere worship.
“Jesus didn’t say we should be mentioning His name. He didn’t say we should use His name for PR.”
Her songwriting is rooted in personal conviction rather than public expectation.
3. Her Music Is Guided by Truth, Not Labels
She explained that many artists rely on religious branding as a strategy, but she avoids anything that feels performative. Her music flows from her spirit, not from pressure to meet religious expectations.
4. Her Marriage and Not Living With Her Husband
Addressing long-running speculation about her relationship, Allyson confirmed she is married, but does not live with her husband.
“I am married but not living with my husband. He stays in his house and I also stay in my house.”
She said this arrangement suits them and keeps their relationship healthy, adding that older generations romanticised marriage and made it seem easier than it is.
She also challenged the idea of marriage as ownership:
“Saying I am in my husband’s house is different from saying I married my husband. My husband and I married each other; we are in one another’s life.”
5. Her Thoughts on Feminism
Allyson said her understanding of feminism is about fairness and equal choice, not competition or hostility.
“Feminism is not saying men are not good people…”
She believes men and women should have the same freedom to choose their paths in life and relationships.
