As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence on October 1, use the holiday as a reminder to check your official identity records.
This is a practical check before a spelling mistake or conflicting date of birth delays a passport application, bank transaction, school admission or government service.
Your records should have the same details. Start with your full name, date of birth, phone number, address and other personal details that appear across different documents. 
Start with your NIN
The National Identification Number (NIN) is the foundation of Nigeria’s identity system. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) describes NIN as an 11-digit number assigned to an individual after enrolment and biometric capture.
Check the details on your NIN slip or official digital identity record. If your name, date of birth or phone number is wrong, begin correction through an official NIMC channel. Do not create a second NIN to solve a mistake.
NIMC says NIN enrolment is free. It also advises people to protect their number and avoid posting it online. Use the NIMC website to find an enrolment centre or access identity services.
If you use NIMC’s self-service modification system, note that the commission says the account is tied to the browser and device used during registration.
Check your birth record
A birth certificate or birth attestation can become important when you apply for a passport, correct your age details or prove your identity for an official process.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) requires an NPC birth certificate or an accepted age declaration for many passport applications. If you do not have the appropriate record, check the National Population Commission services or its birth registration portal.
Do not use an unofficial document simply because it is faster. If the details on your birth record conflict with your NIN, correct the original record through the issuing authority before changing other documents.
Review your passport
If you travel outside Nigeria, check your passport now rather than waiting until a trip is close.
Review the expiry date, name order, date of birth and passport data page. For a fresh application or renewal, use the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) passport portal.
The NIS process requires online application, payment and an appointment for biometric capture. Applicants should also compare their passport details with their NIN record before submitting the application.
A passport is a travel document. It does not replace your NIN or birth record.

Reconcile your banking identity
The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is different from the NIN. Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) describes the BVN as a unique biometric identity that can be verified across Nigerian banks.
Check your BVN by dialling *565*0# from the phone number linked to your bank account. If your name or phone details are wrong, contact your bank branch and ask for the approved correction process.
Do not send your BVN, NIN, PIN or full identity documents to a stranger who promises a faster update.
Check your driver’s licence and PVC
Drivers should confirm that their licence is valid. The FRSC driver’s licence portal allows applications for new licences, renewals and reissues.
FRSC says holders can apply for renewal from 30 days before expiry. New applicants must be at least 18 and complete driving-school requirements.
If you registered to vote, use the INEC Continuous Voter Registration portal to review your details, locate a registration centre, request a transfer or replace a lost or damaged PVC.
A PVC is for voting. It should not be treated as a substitute for your NIN, passport or other identity record.
Keep a secure document pack
Save clear copies of your NIN slip, birth record, passport data page, driver’s licence, PVC and important certificates in one secure folder. Keep one physical copy in a safe place and an encrypted digital backup that you can access when travelling.
On October 1, compare the details across your records and correct the source document first. A few minutes of checking can prevent a much longer delay when you need to prove who you are.
