Cristiano Ronaldo is coming home to get married, according to reports. The Al-Nassr forward and Georgina Rodríguez are reportedly set to exchange vows at Funchal Cathedral in Madeira on August 8, the island where Ronaldo was born, raised, and first dreamed of becoming a footballer.
According to The Sun, the couple have settled on Funchal Cathedral, in the capital of Ronaldo’s home island of Madeira, for their ceremony. Weddings at the cathedral traditionally begin at 3pm, and reports say the celebrations will continue afterwards at the five-star Savoy Palace hotel, a short distance away.
Guests staying at the Savoy Palace have reportedly already been briefed on the arrangements, with two floors of the hotel and several bar areas set to close on Friday and Saturday, a detail that has only fuelled speculation that the property is being locked down for the big day. 
The reported plans mark a change from earlier rumours that the couple would marry at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra. Those claims lost credibility once it emerged the estate would remain open to the public over the same weekend.
For Ronaldo, 41, the choice of venue is less about spectacle and more about where his story began. Funchal is where he grew up, in a household he’s described as sharing one bedroom with all his siblings, before leaving the island at just 11 years old to join Sporting Lisbon’s academy. The city has since honoured him with a bronze statue and a hotel bearing his name. Tributes to a hometown that shaped one of football’s most decorated careers.
Today, with a net worth estimated between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion, Ronaldo could have chosen almost any venue on earth for his wedding. Choosing Funchal instead points to how much the island still means to him, more than two decades after he left it behind to chase a football career.
Ronaldo and Georgina, 32, first met in 2016, when she was working at a Gucci store in Madrid. Their relationship developed steadily and out of the public eye at first, before becoming one of football’s most closely followed romances. Ronaldo proposed last August, and photos taken more recently showed the couple wearing diamond rings while holidaying on a yacht in Mallorca.
The couple share two daughters, Alana and Bella, along with twins Eva Maria and Mateo, born via surrogacy. Ronaldo is also father to Cristiano Jr. from a previous relationship. The family has also faced loss; Bella’s twin brother, Angel, passed away shortly after birth.
Speaking previously to Piers Morgan about his plans to marry Georgina, Ronaldo said he wanted to marry her not simply because she is the mother of his children, but because she is, in his words, the person he loves most.
Ronaldo had long said he and Georgina planned to marry after the 2026 World Cup, reportedly hoping to arrive at the altar with the trophy in hand. That particular dream ended when Portugal were eliminated by eventual champions Spain last month. With the tournament now behind him, the long-anticipated wedding appears to finally be moving ahead.
Neither Ronaldo nor Georgina has personally confirmed the date or venue, and the reports remain sourced to British and Portuguese media rather than official statements from the couple.
Still, between the hotel’s sudden closures and months of mounting speculation, all signs point to Madeira hosting one of football’s biggest personal moments yet.
