The death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has brought fresh attention to earlier reports by controversial and anonymous Instagram gossip blog, Gistlover.
In 2025, Gistlover had raised concerns about the actor’s health and prolonged absence from social media.
Ekubo, known for his roles in romantic comedies and drama, reportedly passed away on May 12, 2026. He died following complications from cancer after he had reportedly undergone treatment, including a kidney transplant, before his condition deteriorated. 
Ekubo’s last public activity on Instagram was on December 30, 2024. His sudden disappearance from social media and public events in 2025 triggered widespread speculation among fans.

What Did Gistlover Say About Alex Ekubo’s Before His Death?
In May 2025, Gistlover published posts questioning the actor’s whereabouts. It used headlines such as “Like play, like play, no one has seen Alex Ekubo again” and “Where is Alex Ekubo?”
These posts amplified fan concerns and fuelled rumours about his health.
At the time, Gistlover and other platforms circulated unverified claims linking Ekubo’s alleged condition to a “terminal disease from gay complications”. The claims prompted the hashtag “Pray for Alex” to trend for a while.
The blogger’s style, which is often dramatic and sprinkled with gossip, led to mixed reactions. Some praised the early alert while others accused Gistlover of spreading unconfirmed personal details.
In response to the growing rumours in May 2025, fellow actor Stanley Ontop publicly stated that Ekubo was “very fine and doing great”. He attributed the absence to the “toxic” nature of social media and a deliberate break for personal reasons. On top of that, he urged fans to stop speculating.
Ekubo’s death has now led many to revisit Gistlover’s earlier posts. While the blogger did not publicly confirm the exact medical diagnosis at the time, some of the posts are about his disappearance, and some are seeing serious illness as prescient.
However, no official confirmation has emerged that Gistlover had access to verified private medical information; the revelations appear to have been based on industry whispers and public absence.
The Nollywood community continues to mourn the actor. Family and close associates have not issued detailed statements addressing the earlier rumours.
