There have been mixed reactions to Tonto Dikeh’s “redemption testimony” in a video that recently surfaced online.

The Nigerian actor and singer, now a self-proclaimed evangelist, revealed details of her past during a church ministration in Tanzania. She told the congregation of God’s mercy and how she moved from a troubled past to the altar.

“Mercy is not what God does, but mercy is who my Saviour is. From a drug addict to an altar that praises God; a devil worshiper to a woman who will pray down fire… to a woman God can trust… I keep asking myself sometimes, ‘God, why me?’ and all I hear is, ‘Why not you?’” she said in the video.

Many Nigerians are skeptical, questioning whether she is putting her acting skills to use or whether she is truly a “woman of God” now. Some are outrightly mocking her, calling it “acting,” a money-making move in the “church business,” or a reboot and rebrand for relevance. They reference her past public dramas and question whether this shift is genuine or opportunistic.

However, a smaller group praises it as an inspiring redemption story, noting that “no one is too far gone for grace.”

Who is Tonto Dikeh?

For context, Tonto Charity Dikeh was a well-known Nollywood actress, singer, and songwriter. She was also a philanthropist and activist before she became a self-described Evangelist and Woman of God.

The Petrochemical Engineer broke into acting around 2006–2007 and became a household name in Nollywood. Her fame was a result of her bold, dramatic movie roles. She has also released music and built a large social media following through her outspoken, no-filter personality. Long before her acting breakthrough, she founded the Tonto Dikeh Foundation for humanitarian work in the year 2000.

Dikeh has always lived a very public and often controversial life. Her marriage to businessman Olakunle Churchill resulted in a son; however, it ended in a very messy way, until January 2026, when they reconciled after “10 years of bitterness.”

Politically, in 2022, she was named the deputy governorship candidate for Rivers State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2023 election.

Her journey to the altar seems to have started in 2025, when similar videos began to surface. Dikeh dropped the “King Tonto” title for “Woman of God, Evangelist Tonto” on March 2, “in alignment with the will and purpose of God.” Since then, she has moved forward with a heavy emphasis on her faith. She was even in the news for performing a deliverance on a schoolgirl, for which she was subsequently sued.

Tonto Dikeh has evolved from a fiery Nollywood star and social media personality to someone now centering her public life around Christian evangelism and personal transformation. She has been sharing variations of this redemption story publicly since her shift toward ministry.

But the question on everyone’s mind remains: is she being real, or is she acting? I guess only time will tell.
