Some may call it a pyrrhic victory.

The last AFCON tournament was full of competition and drama. While Senegal initially emerged as the victors, a shocking twist occurred months after the competition.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) just issued a communication that effectively makes Morocco the winners of the competition based on a technicality. They based their decision on the fact that the Senegalese team walked off the pitch and had to be called back to play; they stated that this act of walking off amounts to a forfeiture.

In their tweet posted on X, they wrote:

“The CAF Appeal Board decided that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 (‘the Match’), with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).”

While the Moroccans are rejoicing, the Senegalese Football Federation released a statement saying;

“This decision is unfair, unprecedented, unacceptable, and tarnishes the reputation of African football. The Federation will, at the earliest opportunity, initiate appeal proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.”

Unsurprisingly, social media has been buzzing with commentary, and very few have been in favour of CAF. Many are calling the decision unfair and biased, while others are stating that the Moroccan team are “sore losers” given their behaviour on the pitch. The general sentiment remains that real champions are awarded on the pitch, not in a courtroom.
